Road Map
One of DanceNL's first projects was the Road Map survey 2010 which was designed to collect as much information as possible from as many communities across the province as possible in order to identify dance practitioners, groups, schools, companies, organizations and their dance activity.
Over 100 people took part in the survey and from the feedback they gave us we were able to gather valuable information about the breadth of dance activity happening across the province and make contact with people who are truly passionate about dance.
Just take a look at the dance genres they represented:
* B-boying
* Ballet
* Ballrooom
* Belly Dancing
* Contemporary
* English Country Dance
* Flamenco
* Irish dance
* Jazz
* Latin
* Lebanese Free Style
* Modern
* Scottish Country Dance
* Tap
* Traditional Newfoundland Dance
We also gathered lots of feedback about what people felt the province's dance community both needs and wants from DanceNL.
Here are just some of the ideas:
* Shaping a cohesive and supportive dance community that embraces traditional and non-traditional forms of dance
* Representing and promoting the NL dance community at a national and international level
* Campaigning for dance in the K-12 curriculum and a post-secondary Dance Studies program in NL
* Developing an awareness of the need for professional standards of teaching and presenting dance
* Publicizing the need for appropriate rehearsal and performance spaces for dance
* Recording, promoting and preserving NL dance heritage / traditional NL dance
* Networking opportunities across the dance community
* Forging links between dance practitioners and encouraging greater collaboration
* Providing inspiration and opportunities for young dancers
* Workshops, training and education programs, continuing professional development
* Showcasing of lesser known dance forms
* Website listing of dance practitioners
* Online information on all aspects of dance: Classes, workshops, dance spaces, injury prevention, good practice, etc.
WHERE WILL THE ROAD MAP LEAD US?
The feedback that was provided by those that completed the survey gave us a wide range of ideas to consider. One of our next tasks is to create a wish list of the work we would like to undertake based on the ideas that were provided - that way we really can ensure we are working on behalf of the dance community, creating a united voice and raising the profile of dance throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
If you haven't already done so, we would be very grateful if you would be able to give a few minutes of your time to complete our Road Map survey as we are still collecting information about dance activities throughout the province.
Just click on one of the links below and the survey will open up for you to complete and submit online.
- Information about Individuals
- Information about Groups, Dance Schools, Companies and Organizations
As you can see, there is much work to do but we cannot address the issues that are near and dear to the hearts of the province's dancers without your support.
